Poem: Sheep
Categories: Life As A Composer
Sheep.
It’s a sheep!
This little poem was composed with the help of some 5-year-olds in Sunderland. We imagined we were sheep and described what it felt like, and also why we would be a good gift for the shepherds to give to baby Jesus. This resulting poem was used as part of their nativity.
It is spoken on this video by Sid Porteous, and he is accompanied by Hilda’s Whimsy for oboe and piano. This piece uses melodic and harmonic ideas from a piece of Sundanese music, which in turn was the subject of a series of study guides and activities about Indonesian music, I was co-writing with with ethnomusicologist, Henry Johnson at Otago University in Dunedin. What a varied musical multiplicity I weave in and out of!
