Song Stories: Banana Boy
Categories: Song Stories
This song was composed for a Year 4 class at St. John Vianney’s Primary School in Brisbane, and has been performed many times by various classes in that school and others in New Zealand and the UK. A favourite performance detail has been to pretend to fall asleep during the final lullaby section, and then burst back to life for the final “Banana Boy!” What larks!

It is one of several banana songs I’ve composed for primary schools over the years including Ooh Ladyfinger, Banana Fanfare 2, The Sixth Duke Of Devonshire and I Love Bananas, and also an entertaining musical drama based upon some of the diseases from which banana plants suffer.
I did include Banana Boy in my Sea Pie Parcel collection of songs for young choirs or classes with optional part singing. In this song the part singing takes the form of repeating voice percussion parts, and some simple harmonies.
Go to Banana Boy for high voices and accompaniment from Sea Pie Parcel.
I have also made a version of Banana Boy for SATB choir, which contains much more harmony, but also keeps the voice percussion ideas.
Here are some similarly non-serious songs that I’ve composed for Year-2-6 classes in primary schools, which you’ll enjoy, if you enjoy this one! There are lots more, but these will get you started!
Peering Through The Rood Screen
Up And Down The Buttery Stairs
Boo To My Ration Book
Autumn Sea
The Song The Singing Tortoise Sang
The Sand Between Her Toes
The Man Who Suddenly Fell Over
When My Roots Begin To Grow
The Great Crested Grebe
Spag Time
Rain
