Song Stories: That First Christmas Night

That First Christmas Night
It’s going to Worksop!

Of course, you might not be going to Worksop, even though you’ve now seen what a beautiful place it can be, but you might be going to your hometown for Christmas, and so in this instance Worksop is a symbol, a totem, if you like!St. Mary's window

This song was composed following a request from Sister Mary Bernadette Ward (then resident in Worksop) to my mother (also resident in Worksop) – “Would Cheryl like to set my Christmas poem to music?” Cheryl would, and here it is in it’s original version for SATB, performed by Rock Festival Choir. It also exists in a high voices version with piano accompaniment.

The melody is gentle and lyrical, and although the accompaniment has a few rhythmic quirks, these are easily surmounted!
