Composed by Burns in 1792 about an impassioned parting of two lovers, it is rumoured to be inspired by the departure for the West Indies to be reunited with her husband, of Clarinda (or Nancy), one of Burns’ romantic friends! The two most famous melodies by which this song is known are combined here in a new arrangement by Cheryl.
