Godric of Finchale was a hermit who lived in the forest near the River Wear and Durham. Stories about him include his kindness towards animals and birds (including snakes), his welcoming of local folk (often bearing gifts) to his fireside, and his habit of submerging himself in the waters of the river, no matter what the weather, in order to bring himself closer to God.
