SOUNZWrite Resources

Just a very lovely bit of the all-lovely New Zealand!

Cheryl was commissioned in the 1990s by SOUNZ, The New Zealand Music Centre, to produce nine different study guides about New Zealand works to help with the study of these works in NZ secondary schools. In 2000, she was asked to write a similar guide using a selection of NZ works for use in primary schools. Almost all these resources are still available from SOUNZ in Wellington (Some have been updated as the curriculum has been updated):

Ears Wide Open Taringa Areare

This teaching resource, commissioned by the Centre for New Zealand Music, SOUNZ in Wellington, provides a listening-centred approach to a selection of 23 New Zealand pieces of music ranging in style from popular through Jazz to classical, brass bands, electro-acoustic and traditional Maori. It was written to address heartily the requirements of the music discipline in the new (at the time) New Zealand Arts Curriculum, and to be used easily by primary school teachers no matter what their musical experience or confidence. It is used throughout the entire country – in over a third of all primary and intermediate schools and also in some high schools, and widely in teacher training institutions. All activities included in the resource were written and trialled by Cheryl. You can order Taringa Areare here:
